Quick question: how long is your best-selling Amazon title right now? If you're like most sellers, it's probably one long line packed with keywords — brand name, size, color, use case, gift idea, and a few extra words just in case. It's messy, but it's worked for years. That's about to change. Starting July 27, 2026, Amazon is cutting product titles from ~200 characters down to 75 characters, across every category except media (books, music, video).

To make up for the lost space, Amazon is introducing Item Highlights — a new, searchable 125-character field that sits alongside the title in search results and on product pages. Do the math: 75 + 125 = 200, so nothing is lost — it's just reorganized into two fields instead of one.

“ This Title change is a game changer decision for sellers. Amazon is going to rewrite your Titles without asking. It’s wild ! Something that you have been optimizing for years is gone and AI gets to decide what will be there and what not. Pulling your whole catalogue and mapping which keyword has generated maximum revenue and traffic for you is a professional stuff and a nightmarish work load for bigger catalogues.”

TLDR / Summary

  1. Why the Change - Amazon is shortening titles because most people shop on phones, and long titles don't fit.

  2. Before vs After - Titles go from one long, messy line to a short 75-character title plus a new 125-character Item Highlights box.

  3. The Risk : AI Rewrites - If you don't fix your title in time, Amazon's AI will rewrite it for you, and it might remove words that were bringing you sales.

  4. Quick Action Plan - Check your titles now, fix your best sellers first, and write your own details instead of leaving them blank and allowing Amazon to do it for you.

  5. Conclusion - Fix your titles yourself now, or let Amazon's AI decide for you later.

Why the Change

Simple answer: phone. Amazon says shorter titles display fully on mobile (where 60%+ of shopping happens) and bring it in line with other retailers. It also fits Amazon's push toward AI-driven shopping tools like Rufus and now Alexa, which parse clean, concise titles more easily than keyword-stuffed ones.

Before vs. After

Before (206 characters): GoatCo Plush Stuffed Goat Toy, 12 Inch Soft Cuddly Farm Animal Plushie for Kids Toddlers Boys Girls, Washable Nursery Decor Birthday Gift Baby Shower Present, Realistic Barnyard Animal Collection

After — Title (75 chars): GoatCo Plush Stuffed Goat Toy, 12 Inch Soft Cuddly Farm Animal Plushie

After — Item Highlights (125 chars): Machine washable • Great for nursery decor • Ideal birthday or baby shower gift • Part of the realistic barnyard animal collection

The Risk: AI Rewrites

After July 27, any title still over 75 characters gets automatically rewritten by Amazon's AI. Listings stay live, but:

  • Brand-registered sellers get a 14-day review window to approve or edit the AI's version.

  • Non-brand sellers may see changes applied with little or no notice.

Sellers on Amazon's forums have flagged that AI rewrites often strip out the specific long-tail keywords that were driving traffic — a real concern for anyone who hasn't updated titles themselves first.

Quick Action Plan

  1. Export your catalog and flag titles over 75 characters

  2. Fix your top revenue-driving ASINs first. For bigger catalogue, follow 80 : 20 Rule, Fix your 20% catalogue first that drives 80% revenue for your brand..

  3. Structure: Brand + Primary Keyword + One Differentiator + Size/Variant.

  4. Fix both parent and child ASIN titles in variations.

  5. Write your own Item Highlights — don't leave them blank.

  6. Review "View Enhancements" and "Review Listing Changes" before approving anything

Where to edit this in Seller Central

  • Edit the fields: Manage Inventory → Edit on the ASIN. Title and Item Highlights sit together. (In flat files: Title is item_name, Item Highlights is title_differentiation.)

  • See Amazon's rewrites: Manage Inventory → View Enhancements. You get 14 days to approve, edit or reject. Silence means Amazon's version wins.

  • Bulk editing: not yet. Item Highlights is on-screen only, and flat-file upload errors out. Plan for manual edits.

Conclusion

Amazon isn't reducing how much you can say — it's forcing you to decide what belongs up front versus what belongs one layer deeper. Sellers who rewrite their own titles before July 27 stay in control. Everyone else gets whatever Amazon's AI decides for them.
